Maine businesses want global warming addressed

Business leaders from around the state gathered at a press conference in Augusta today to release a letter written to Maine's congressional delegation urging action on climate change.

More than 100 businesses, including Hannaford Bros. Co. in Scarborough, Oakhurst Dairy in Portland, Lee Auto Malls in Auburn and Verso Paper of Jay, called on U.S. Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins and U.S. Reps. Mike Michaud and Chellie Pingree to enact legislation to remediate global warming. "We cannot let our negligence today ruin the special character of this beautiful state for generations to come," said Nancy Gray, co-owner of the Harraseeket Inn in Freeport, in a press release from the Natural Resources Council of Maine.

The letter calls for a climate security bill to be passed in 2009, and encourages the delegation to support clean energy because it is an industry already being explored by Maine companies.
