Maine DOL objects to OSHA rule proposal

The Maine Department of Labor has come out against a proposed change to federal workplace safety reporting that would break out workplace injury and illness rates by individual employers.

The Portland Press Herald reported the rule, proposed by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration, would require businesses to file their health and safety records electronically, allowing the agency to post them online.

OSHA officials said the proposed rule aims to help safety officials target industries that raise concerns and to let potential employees review the safety records of a business.

Maine Labor Commissioner Jeanne Paquette told the newspaper her department will file its objection before the deadline Monday. Paquette said her opposition stems from uncertainty about how worker and employer privacy would be protected, especially in cases of employers with only a few workers.
