Maine Film Center to buy Waterville cinema

The Maine Film Center Inc. plans to buy the Railroad Square Cinema in Waterville, the site of the annual Maine International Film Festival.

According to the Portland Press Herald, the Waterville-based nonprofit is expected to close on the purchase Dec. 18. It plans to buy digital projection equipment and make other improvements to the three-screen cinema. The festival draws hundreds of film enthusiasts to a 10-day film festival each summer.

Shannon Haines, the film center's new executive director, told the newspaper Waterville has a lot of potential as a hub of film and film education and other film-related businesses. She also told the newspaper that Railroad Square also was one of 12 independent cinemas invited to take part in the Sundance Film Institute's Art House Project, which brings film industry professionals together to brainstorm and learn from each other.
