Maine gets 10% cut to LIHEAP fund

Maine will see a 10% cut in federal heating assistance funds this winter, according to an announcement by Sen. Olympia Snowe.

The allocation of $34.9 million for the state's Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program is down from around $38 million last year, according to a press release.

Before that, in 2010, the state received $55.6 million for the program and, in 2008, received $80 million for the program from a federal fund of $5.1 billion.

The federal LIHEAP budget this year comes in around $3 billion, down from the $3.5 billion approved before last winter.
