Maine gets $100K in Google Street View settlement

Maine will receive over $100,000 as part of a $7 million national settlement with Internet giant Google over information the company's Street View mapping vehicles collected from wireless networks while driving streets around the country.

Maine Attorney General Janet Mills announced Tuesday that Maine is joined by 38 other states and the District of Columbia in the suit that alleges Google collected and stored pieces of data transmitted over unsecured wireless networks as its Street View vehicles passed by.

As part of the settlement, the company agreed to remove or disable equipment that collected data from the unsecured networks and has agreed not to collect that data in the future. The company maintains it was unaware the data was collected and that the data was not used.

The company agreed to destroy any data its Street View cars collected from unsecured wi-fi networks under the terms of the settlement.
