Maine gets $80M in LIHEAP funding
The federal government has released $5.1 billion for its Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program for fiscal year 2009, with nearly $80 million of that headed to Maine, according to a press release from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Maine will receive a total of about $79.2 million, with approximately $49.5 million in base funding and $29.7 million in emergency funding, according to news channel WCSH 6. Maine is one of seven oil-reliant states that rely heavily on oil heat that received contingency funding, according to the press release.
The nearly $80 million will help about 84,000 households with heating costs, with an average benefit of $792. Last year, LIHEAP funding went to about 50,000 households, with an average benefit of $779, according to Current Publishing.
