Maine-Nova Scotia ferry to restart in May

The Maine-based consortium STM Quest Inc. will use the ship the Nova Star for its new ferry service between Portland and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.
A Maine-based consortium was selected to restart a ferry service between Portland and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, with the help of a $21 million subsidy from the Canadian province.
The Associated Press reported Graham Steele, Nova Scotia’s economic development minister, said Thursday that a deal was struck with STM Quest Inc., a company comprised of the Eliot-based Quest Navigation, the Singapore-based ST Marine Ltd. and the Miami-based International Shipping Partners.
According to the agreement, the ferry service will start in May 2014. The company will receive the $21 million in the form of $10.5 million in startup costs and $1.5 million in annual marketing assistance over seven years.
The sailing schedule for the new service will be from May 1 to Oct. 31, departing daily from Yarmouth at 9 a.m. and arriving in Portland at 5 p.m. The return trip would leave at 8 p.m. to arrive in Yarmouth at 7 a.m.
