Maine restaurant inspection data going online

State officials are planning to launch a new online database that would allow the public to browse Maine restaurant inspection reports.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the state Center for Disease Control and Prevention is purchasing a new database system that is used in several states. Though a contract isn’t finalized yet, the system is expected to go online next spring.

Greg Dugal, president and CEO of the Maine Restaurant Association, said his hope is that the online system will discern the difference between violations that concern food safety and violations that don’t. He said he also hopes the system will indicate that the inspection reports only indicate a snapshot in time for restaurants.

The state had been planning to adopt a new system for several years, but a 2013 Maine Sunday Telegram investigation uncovering lax inspection policies spurred the state to act faster, CDC’s Division of Environmental Health Director Nancy Beardsley told the newspaper.
