Maine Wood Concepts to buy Vic Firth line

Newport-based Vic Firth announced today it will sell its gourmet line of pepper mills and rolling pins to Maine Wood Concepts, based in New Vineyard.

Vic Firth, which is the world's largest manufacturer of drumsticks, says the move helps the company focus on its core business, according to a press release.

Doug Fletcher, president of Maine Wood Concepts, said in the release that the acquisition will boost its work force 25%, adding 20 jobs at the company's New Vineyard location, and will increase work at its sawmill and finishing departments.

Fletcher said the company is seeking quotes for expanding the company's manufacturing facilities to produce a variety of salt and pepper mills, rolling pins and other kitchen items under the "Made in Maine Gourmet Line" name.

The deal includes all equipment, inventory, intellectual property and customer lists associated with that portion of the business. The purchase price was not disclosed.

Maine Wood Concepts was founded in 1971. In 2005, it acquired  Cincinnati-based Lutz File & Tool Co. and later that year purchased the custom manufacturing division of Pride Mfg. Co. in Guilford. Both of those acquisitions were incorporated into the 80-employee New Vineyard location.
