Maine's jobless rate dips in October

Preliminary estimates show Maine's unemployment rate dropped to 7.4% for October, down from 7.6% in September, but up from a year ago.

Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows the drop in Maine's jobless rate comes as the unemployment rate rose one-tenth of a percent nationally, from 7.8% in September to 7.9% in October.

For Maine, those figures mean the state had an estimated 52,700 unemployed workers in October, up around 1,500 from one year ago.

The total nonfarm payroll jobs shrunk slightly — by 300 in comparison with a revised September estimate — to 595,300.

One year ago, the national unemployment rate stood at 8.9% and Maine's unemployment rate was 7.3%.
