Major candidates face no primary challengers

Candidates in three of the four biggest election contests will head toward November with no challengers in the June primaries after a filing deadline passed Monday.

The Portland Press Herald reported the U.S. House race for Maine’s 2nd District will have Democratic and Republican hopefuls first facing off against each other while races for a U.S. Senate seat, Maine’s 1st District and the governor’s race will not have primary contests.

The end of the filing period sets in place a 2nd District Republican primary between former State Senate President Kevin Raye of Perry and former State Treasurer Bruce Poliquin, who moved to Oakland in December to join the race. Democratic State Sens. Emily Cain of Orono and Troy Jackson of Allagash will battle for their party’s nomination to replace outgoing Democratic U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud, who is running for governor.

Republican incumbent Gov. Paul LePage and Michaud do not face primaries in that race, in which independent Eliot Cutler is also running.

Republican U.S. Sen. Susan Collins does not face a primary challenger in her bid for re-election against Democratic challenger Shenna Bellows, the former executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Maine.

In the 1st District, Democrat U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree will face off against Isaac Misiuk, a second-year political science student at the University of Southern Maine and former real estate agent.
