Midcoast economic council poised to dissolve

The federal government has been asked to authorize a new midcoast regional planning council, after the existing council failed to work in a unified and collaborative way.

Directors of the Midcoast Economic Development District voted recently to ask the U.S. Economic Development Administration to recognize the Midcoast Council of Governments as the development authority for Brunswick, Harpswell, Sagadahoc County and municipalities within Lincoln County that want to participate, according to The Times Record. The action follows months of internal strife at MCEDD, with some directors alleging it was heavily weighted with Sagadahoc County and Brunswick representatives. As a result, the Lincoln County contingent has refused to pay its share of local matching costs necessary to trigger federal grant money since last fall, according to the paper.

If the EDA accepts the change, towns that do not become members of the council will not be eligible for several federal grant programs, according to the news report.
