Minor service interuptions reported from earthquake

A rare earthquake gave a brief test to Maine's communication bandwidth in the southern portion of the state, but little damage was reported to state emergency management officials.

The Bangor Daily News reported that a 4.0-magnitude earthquake with its epicenter in Hollis shook many parts of southern Maine at 7:12 p.m., but Maine Emergency Management Agency officials had no reports of damage or injuries.

Andrew Russell, manager of communications at Time Warner Cable, told the paper that intermittent service outages were reported after the quake, but service was back to normal by late Tuesday night.

An AT&T spokeswoman said that increased call volume may have caused problems with service, which she said is common in the wake of an event like Tuesday's earthquake.

Boston College geophysics professor John Ebel told the BDN that aftershocks from the quake are possible but unlikely.
