Navy allocates $38M for Kittery shipyard work
The U.S. Navy has approved a $38 million renovation to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery to upgrade and modernize its facilities.
The Navy last year said it would invest approximately $100 million during fiscal year 2012 to modernize the shipyard after a November 2010 report by the Government Accountability Office found that it, along with three other shipyards, were in need of upgrades, according to a press release from U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and Defense Appropriations Subcommittee. The money will be used for energy and structural repairs of the shipyard’s submarine operations, making it more energy efficient and improving industrial materials handling. According to the November 2010 report, the cost of fixing the backlog of necessary improvements at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is $513 million.
Marlborough, Mass.-based Environmental Chemical Corp. was awarded the contract to perform the work, which is expected to be completed by December 2014.
