New commissioners appointed, nominated
Two state commissions are getting new members. Two Land Use Regulation Commission commissioners were sworn into office Wednesday, while Gov. Paul LePage nominated an engineer to the Maine Public Utilities Commission.
LURC's newest commissioners are Durward Humphrey of Benedicta and James May of Mapleton, according to a press release. Humphrey was one of 13 members appointed by LePage and others to serve on a panel recommending ways to reform LURC. He also is CEO for the Katahdin Valley Health Center in Patten and is a registered Maine Master Guide. May is a retired forester who worked for 36 years in Ashland for Prentiss & Carlisle Co. Inc., a land management company. They will attend their first LURC meeting today at the Washington County Community College in Calais. LURC handles land planning for the state's 10 million acres of unorganized territories. The board is composed of seven commissioners appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Legislature.
LePage yesterday nominated Mark Vannoy of Waldoboro as a PUC commissioner. If confirmed by the Legislature, Vannoy would serve through March 31, 2013, to complete the term of Vendean Vafiades, who resigned from her position earlier this year. Vannoy is currently an associate vice president at Wright-Pierce in the civil and infrastructure engineering practice group. He will appear before the Joint Standing Committee on Energy, Utilities and Technology in the upcoming weeks. The PUC regulates electric, natural gas, telecommunications and water utilities.
