New Veterans Memorial Bridge opens

The new $65 million Veterans Memorial Bridge between Portland and South Portland, under construction since 2010, opened Thursday. The bridge was part of $100 million in transportation upgrades the Maine Department of Transportation and the Maine Turnpike Authority announced in 2010.

The bridge is six lanes at its widest point and includes a 12-foot-wide pedestrian and bike path, according to the Portland Press Herald. The bridge sees more than 22,000 vehicles every day and is one of the busiest in the state. It replaces the original bridge built in the 1950s. Woolwich company Reed & Reed Inc. served as the general contractor, and the project put more than 100 people to work, said CEO Jackson Parker.

The bulk of the bridge's cost, about $50 million, came from federal money.
