Northern Penobscot Tech launching natural-gas course

Northern Penobscot Tech, a vocational school in Lincoln, plans to launch an adult-education course to train natural gas pipeline technicians in April, partly as an effort to provide work opportunities for recently laid-off mill workers.

The Bangor Daily News reported school officials and Maine Department of Labor officials are scheduled to hold an informational meeting tonight about the program. Chris Weiss, the instructor for the program, told the newspaper that he expects work on a 12-mile pipeline to the Lincoln Paper and Tissue mill could keep anywhere from 50 to 100 technicians employed.

The program, he said, would offer three certifications required for working on natural gas and propane pipelines and he is developing the program to qualify under a federal retraining and employment service program through which laid-off workers at the Lincoln mill qualified for job training.
