Old Town pursues retail for former canoe-building site

The city of Old Town is pursuing retailers like Reny’s and Trader Joe’s for a six-acre parcel that was once the site of an Old Town Canoe factory.

“We want to be a destination,” said Ron Harriman, the city’s economic development director, the Bangor Daily News reported Monday.

Site plans for the Middle Street redevelopment were presented to the City Council by Old Town-based James W. Sewall Co.

Development could also include townhouses and an apartment building, the BDN reported.

The Old Town Canoe factory moved its manufacturing from Middle Street to Gilman Avenue in 2009. It sold the property to the city for $1 in 2011 and the factory has been razed.
