Online retail kills iconic Lisbon costume shop

After 62 years, Drapeau’s Costumes, in Lisbon, is closing.

The Times Record reported the business, which started in Lewiston and moved to Lisbon 12 years ago, never fully recovered from the recession, a problem compounded by changing retail trends.

“I can’t compete with the online fast and cheap,” owner Kris Cornish of Topsham told the newspaper, adding that lower-quality costumes provided by nonprofits have also skimmed her high school business providing costumes for plays.

Cornish sold the building in August but was unable to find a buyer for the business. Cornish and two part-time workers have hand-sewn many of the approximately 4,000 costumes, which she said she would try to sell off.

The store will remain open until Halloween and most of the costumes are going for their rental fees — between $40 and $50, the newspaper reported.
