Pittsfield call center closes doors

A Pittsfield call center abruptly closed Friday, leaving 65 employees out of work.

Global Contact Services laid off the center's workers Friday after receiving the news that a major client had pulled its contract, according to the Bangor Daily News. George Simons, vice president of marketing for the North Carolina-based company, told the paper the move was "very unfortunate" and the result of the loss of major work. He did not specify the client who canceled its contract. He said he didn't know if the employees would be offered severance or jobs elsewhere with the company. The company, which handles inbound and outbound calls for clients such as AIG, Bank of America and American Express, opened the Pittsfield location in 2008.

Global Contact Solutions also shuttered a center in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. It now has eight call centers in the United States and one in the Philippines.
