Portland tech firm sues Microsoft over patent

Portland-based computer company Surfcast has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against industry giant Microsoft, according to the Portland Press Herald.

The company is seeking damages for infringements related to the new "Live Tiles" feature of Windows 8, which was released last week.

Wired magazine reported that Surfcast's claim hinges on one patent in particular, which deals with a "system and method for simultaneous display of multiple information sources," which the company claims Microsoft uses in six of its products.

The magazine reported that Microsoft points to its patent covering a "tile space user interface for mobile devices" as protecting the technology.
