Press Herald closes bureaus

To offset its steady loss of advertising revenue, the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram will close its four news bureaus and finalize job cuts announced earlier this month.

In the paper's second round of job cuts since March, 25 employees accepted voluntary severance packages. Six were laid off and five vacancies will not be filled, the Press Herald reported late yesterday. In the newsroom, five reporters, two editors, one graphic artist and one copy editor took voluntary severance offers, and two empty newsroom positions will not be filled.

The paper will shut its offices in Augusta, Washington, D.C., Biddeford and Bath by next Wednesday, and the staffers at the Maine bureaus will move to the Portland headquarters. The D.C. reporter was one of the employees laid off.
