PUC chair in limbo

Sharon Reishus' role as chair of the Public Utilities Commission could be in jeopardy, as Gov. John Baldacci drags his feet on whether to reappoint her to the post.

Reishus' six-year term on the PUC expired March 31, but state law dictates that she continue in her role until reappointed by the governor, according to Capitol News Service. Baldacci has already missed two opportunities to reappoint Reishus during previous legislative sessions, the news service reported. Baldacci nominated her to the three-member PUC in 2003 and appointed her chair in 2008 when Kurt Adams resigned.

Baldacci said his administration is currently evaluating the skill sets necessary for the job and will be ready to make a decision in time for the January session of the Legislature. "The skill sets she has are tremendous," Baldacci told the news service. "But with the issues that the state is facing over the long haul, I want to make sure her skill sets match up."
