Ready Seafood gains approval for lobster-processing facility in Saco

Ready Seafood in Portland is planning to build a new lobster-processing facility in Saco, after winning zoning approval for the facility that will be built on 40 acres.

The Portland Press Herald reported the company won the approval Monday night.

“We feel it is the right thing to do for the industry, which certainly needs more processing infrastructure,” John Ready, co-founder of the company, told the Press Herald.

Saco is already home to lobster processor Cape Seafood.

According to an Associated Press report posted by Yahoo Finance, Ready Seafood’s Saco plant will be one of the largest lobster-processing facilities in the country. The facility will include space for processing, as well as tanks to keep live lobsters for shipping. The project could help alter the North American lobster business.

"These lobsters are already going across the border to Canada. Why aren't they being processed here?" Brendan Ready told The Associated Press.

Ready Seafood hopes to break ground in June and get the first phase of the project open by summer 2019.
