Redzone Wireless LLC has finished activating seven new fixed wireless broadband sites serving more than 10,000 new business and residential customers across Maine, with seven more nearing completion.

The seven new active sites are in Farmington, Dover-Foxcroft, Calais, Machias, Fort Kent, Belfast and Fairfield, and serve portions of more than 25 communities, according to a news release.

Activation is also nearing completion in another seven sites: Windham, New Sharon, Alfred, Anson, Skowhegan and Ossipee, in addition to a new site providing expanded service in Bath.

Redzone’s total Maine broadband coverage now exceeds 280,000 households, representing 50% of all Maine homes. The broadband network is one of the largest FCC- licensed fixed wireless broadband deployments in the U.S., according to the release.

The company’s goal is to activate 26 new sites by year's end.

"The need for expanded broadband access is a growing priority virtually everywhere in Maine,” Michael Forcillo, Redzone executive vice president, said in the release.

In May, Redzone announced it had completed  expansion of new fixed wireless broadband services to over 1,400 business and residential locations in the towns of Belfast and Bayside. The expansion area was selected based hundreds of service requests received from residents and businesses in the area. The Belfast and Bayside expansion was privately funded, and was part of Redzone’s planned Maine network expansion.

The multimillion-dollar expansion by the Rockland-based company follows another expansion in 2018, which included networks serving Farmington, Dover-Foxcroft, Calais and Machias.

The company, which launched in 2014, leases wireless spectrum bands, rather than using cable or fiber. A $4 million loan from Camden National Bank, backed by the Finance Authority of Maine, supported its startup.
