Report: Climate change to impact ME economy

University of Maine faculty today submitted to Gov. John Baldacci a report on the likely effects of climate change on Maine's environment and economy.

"Maine's Climate Future: An Initial Assessment", which the governor requested in 2007, examines data on past climate change, evidence of accelerated rates of change and the implications of continued climate change. The report addresses climate change's impact in several key economic sectors: agriculture, forest products, tourism and recreation, transportation and energy.

The UMaine researchers found that climate change could indirectly raise the cost of doing business in Maine because of related issues like an increase in flooding, but that climate change could also offer opportunities to expand the economy thanks to longer summers and new species of plants and animals.
