Report: First Wind farms' output meets expectations
Wind farms operated by Massachusetts-based First Wind generated between 27% and 37% of their capacity last year, falling within industry standards, according to a report released over the weekend. The company's four wind farms generated enough electricity to power about 64,000 homes, the Bangor Daily News reported.
The Stetson I farm in Down East Maine generated the most power, about 154,000 megawatts, last year, followed by Mars Hill in Aroostook County at 127,500 megawatts and Stetson II at 59,700 megawatts. The Rollins wind farm in Penobscot County came online in July 2011 and generated 59,000 megawatts for the half-year. It's the first time the company has released annual generation data for its four operating farms.
A wind farm opponent, however, called First Wind's numbers misleading. Kevin Gurall, president of Partnership for the Preservation of the Downeast Lakes Watershed, said most of the wind farms' electricity is consumed out of state. First Wind spokesman John Lamontagne said the projects power homes and businesses in Maine and New England.
