Report: ME ranks high in land conservation

Land trusts in Maine have conserved a total of 2 million acres, ranking Maine second in the nation for the highest amount of conserved land.

Maine conserved 143,710 acres between 2005 and 2010, an 8% increase that brought the total amount of conserved land to 1,796,387 acres, according to a report from the Land Trust Alliance. Maine ranks second behind California for acres conserved, and first in the Northeast. Maine has 88 land trusts that supported 433 paid positions in 2010, as well as utilized 3,846 active volunteers and 41,767 members and financial supporters.

A total of 10 million acres have been conserved nationwide since 2005, bringing the total amount to 47 million acres.
