Retail sales climb 4% in November

Retail sales grew nearly 4% in November, thanks to a strong showing in the building supply category.

Total taxable retail sales in November were $1.28 billion, a 3.8% increase over November 2010, according to the Maine State Planning Office. Building supply sales, up for the sixth month in a row, rose 17.8% in November, while lodging and other retail -- which includes drug stores, antique dealers and gift shops -- both grew 6.3% over the previous year. Auto transportation, meanwhile, dropped 5%.

Retail sales for the three months from September through November were 4.1% higher than the same period one year prior.
