Retirement doesn’t always mean ‘retiring’

Retirement can mean many things to many people, but in Maine it doesn’t necessarily mean spending days on a golf course or lounging on the beach.

Lately, we’ve seen former Avesta Housing President and CEO Dana Totman reemerge from retirement to be the interim leader of Maine Trails, which certainly requires a level of energy and activity. Another Dana, Dana Connors, will step down as the longtime president of the Maine State Chamber of Commerce. Knowing his energy level, it’s likely he will apply his considerable expertise and energy to new pursuits.

Likewise, in this issue, we see a whole new wave of “retirees” who have plans for a very active retirement in Maine.

For our cover story, Renee Cordes tracked down a number of couples who have found worthy pursuits in Maine. They’re staying active — and they’re not shying away from Maine winter weather. “There’s this assumption that people always go south,” says a sales director at a 55-and-older community, Shireen Shahawy of OceanView. “What we find is that some of our residents might go away for a few weeks in the winter, but they’re not afraid of being here.” See “Retiring to Vacationland,” which starts on Page 12.

Meanwhile, the firms and people that cater to retirees (and their retirement portfolios) are expanding in Maine. As one wealth management professional tells Laurie Schreiber, “You can’t offer more and better services for clients without having more people to provide those talents.” See “Financial wellness,” which starts on Page 18.

Our list of Maine-based registered investment advisors is on Page 26.
