Right-to-work bills fall

Two right-to-work bills failed to clear Maine's Legislature this session as Democratic majorities nixed the proposals that would have curtailed an employee union's ability to collect dues.

The Associated Press reported that the right-to-work proposal and another that would have prohibited public employers from taking fees from all employees to support a union failed in the Senate by a 21-13 margin Thursday. The House rejected both bills in separate votes on Wednesday.

The state's Legislature has consistently turned down right-to-work proposals since 1948, when voters turned down the idea in a referendum.
