Rockland waives cruise ship fee hike

The city of Rockland has agreed to waive a hike in cruise ship fees for a mega ship making port in October, after the cruise ship line and local business owners spoke out against the measure.

The Rockland City Council voted Monday to waive the previously approved increase from $1 to $6 per passenger for the 2,500-passenger Jewel of the Seas, scheduled to arrive in October, according to the Herald Gazette. Royal Caribbean had threatened to cancel the Rockland visit, saying it had budgeted the trip based on the $1-per-passenger fee. The Penobscot Bay Regional Chamber of Commerce and local business owners also pushed for the one-time waiver, arguing the passengers on the ship would benefit the local economy.

The council in March voted to increase the per-passenger fee, according to the paper.
