SBA warns of scam

Small business owners should be aware of a scam that involves letters falsely claiming to have been sent by the SBA asking for bank account information in order to qualify the businesses for federal tax rebates, according to a warning released yesterday by the U.S. Small Business Administration.

The fraudulent letters, which appear to be on SBA letterhead, tell recipients that the SBA needs the business's bank and account number to assess its eligibility for a tax rebate under the Economic Stimulus Act, according to the SBA press release. The SBA says it has not sent or authorized the letters and that small business owners should ignore the requests for bank account information.

The SBA's Office of Inspector General is investigating the scam. Anyone that receives such a letter is asked to report it to the OIG Fraud Line at 1 (800) 767-0385, or e-mail at OIGHotline@sba.gov.
