Scallop fishermen expect bountiful year

Maine scallop fishermen are expecting record prices for their catch next year, the result of restored scallop populations and decreased competition from abroad.

The season for scalloping opened Dec. 17 and fishermen hope an increased global demand will bring prices close to $10 a pound, according to The Associated Press. Prices for scallops were just under $8 a pound in 2010.

Concerned about overfishing, Maine marine regulators two years ago shut down 20% of the coastline to scalloping, froze the number of fishing licenses and shrunk the scalloping season, measures which have helped restore some scallop populations. Effects from Japan's tsunami have curtailed that country's scallop production, creating a supply gap that Maine fishermen hope to fill, according to The AP.
