Scarborough co. up for national award, cash

Scarborough-based seaweed manufacturer VitaminSea is up for a national award and a $50,000 prize from the organization Slow Money at an event today in Denver.

The Bangor Daily News reported that VitaminSea is Maine's only representative among 24 companies under consideration for Slow Money's Entrepreneur of the Year award.

In addition to the cash award, company representative Rod Williams told the paper that the national exposure will give the company another chance to reach potential investors.

After a 2012 presentation to a group from Slow Money, which brings together investors interested in sustainable farming and food production businesses, VitaminSea owner Tom Roth brought in $100,000 from three new investors.

Roth left his work as a commercial groundfisherman in 2005 to start VitaminSea, which uses seaweed for fertilizer and a line of food products.
