Scarborough dredging likely to miss deadline

Scarborough officials expect a $1.7 million dredging project won’t be completed by its March 31 deadline, delaying beach restoration projects and failing to clear up navigation problems through the Scarborough River.

The Portland Press Herald reported U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contractor North America Landscaping, Construction & Dredge Co. has cleared just 10,000 cubic yards of the 115,000 cubic yards it was to pump onto the town’s Western Beach, reopening passage for the river’s 35 commercial fishermen and 100 recreational boaters.

The project’s time frame is limited by a Maine Department of Environmental Protection permit that prohibits dredging work between April 1 and Sept. 15 to prevent interference with shorebird nesting and development.

Town Manager Tom Hall said there’s no hope or expectation that the dredging project will be finished this spring and he was uncertain if the project would resume later this year or early next year.
