Six companies honored for manufacturing, service work

Gov. Paul LePage yesterday presented six Maine companies with a 2012 Governor's Award for Business Excellence. The 22nd annual awards recognize Maine companies that demonstrate a high level of commitment to their communities, employees and to manufacturing or service excellence.

The award recipients are:

  • Allen Insurance and Financial of Camden, which employs 68 people and is one of the most experienced marine insurance agencies in the world, according to a press release. It's also one of the longest continually operating businesses in Knox County.
  • James D. Julia Inc. of Fairfield provides professional auction and appraisal services and is an international leader in the auctioning of firearms, rare glass and lamps, antique toys and other fine art and antiques.
  • Moose River Lumber Co., which has a work force of 86 people and operates high-tech saw and planer mills in the town of Moose River. The company saws, planes, dries and distributes dimension lumber and boards to retailers and builders throughout the eastern United States.
  • Saddleback Maine, a ski resort in Rangeley, since 2003 has increased its work force from 66 employees to 225 during the winter season. The four-season property has invested more than $40 million during that time to improve and expand operations and offerings.
  • Tambrands Inc. of Auburn, owned by Procter & Gamble, has a work force of 450 people. The Tambrands plant is the only one in North America manufacturing Tampax products for the United States and Canada, and is a lead site for developing new Tampax product ideas and research.
  • Volk Packaging Corp. in Biddeford designs, manufactures and distributes high-quality corrugated and foam products, including shipping containers, inner packaging and stock boxes throughout New England. The family-owned company currently employs 75 people.
