South Portland's Makeup Shop expands to Freeport

Alise Snyder, a 20-year professional makeup artist, is preparing to open her second store in downtown Freeport this week, following her success with her store, The Makeup Shop, on Western Avenue in South Portland.

Snyder had already planned to expand, but decided to open the new store sooner after national cosmetics retailer Sephora opened a store in the Maine Mall in June.

"After considering many locations in southern Maine for our second boutique, we are thrilled to join the vibrant community of Freeport," she says. "Our goal is to create intimate shopping spaces that help people feel good about themselves, through product education and customer service."

Snyder says she leased an 850-square-foot space for two years with options at 15 Main St., next to the Beadin' Path and clothing store The Co/Op. She invested $70,000 to open the new store and purchase the cosmetic products, less than the $100,000 it took to open her first store originally located on Congress Street in Portland.

Snyder says 2009 was The Makeup Shop's best year after it moved to its present location from downtown Portland. Sales shot up 78% over 2008 because the store was able to attract more customers being closer to the Maine Mall than it could downtown, she says.

Andrea Snyder, who works with her older sister and their mother, Gloria Littlefield, says the business has grown from four to seven employees, including five full-time and two part-time make-up consultants. She says they hope to add two more employees at the Freeport store, which is scheduled to open Friday.
