State parks see record visitors

Maine's state parks set a 21-year record in 2010 for the number of visitors, the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands announced.

More than 2.6 million people visited the state's 48 parks and historic sites, a 10.8% increase over last year's 2.3 million, according to a press release. Day use at the parks increased 10.6%, and camping increased 12.7%. A total of $3.4 million in revenues was returned to the General Fund in fiscal year 2010 from parks use. Officials attributed the rise to increased efforts to market the parks, new investments funded with money from the $7.5 million November 2007 bond and favorable weather.

2010 marked the Maine parks system's 75th anniversary.
