State reviews bids on mining rules revision

State officials are negotiating with an outside contractor to rewrite Maine's metallic mining regulations as part of a debate over mining at Bald Mountain in Aroostook County.

The Bangor Daily News reported that the state's Department of Environmental Protection is evaluating bids submitted  for the rewrite of the state's regulations, but officials would not say how many bids the department had received by the August deadline.

DEP officials opted to look to outside contractors at the Legislature's urging, citing a lack of specific expertise in the area of mining regulations within the department.

The newspaper reported that mining regulations have not been rewritten in the past 20 years and that metallic mining in Maine has been mostly inactive since the 1980s.
