Study: 10-day Acadia closure cost $5M in visitor spending

The Coalition of National Park Service Retirees estimated the federal government shutdown has resulted in the loss of around $5.3 million in visitor spending at Acadia National Park, 10 days into the shutdown.

The group estimated that the shutdown has barred around 68,493 visitors from the park and that the loss of that spending puts approximately 3,331 jobs in jeopardy, including 3,147 jobs outside of the park.

The study estimated that the shutdown of the country’s national parks has resulted in the loss of $76 million in visitor spending nationwide, including around $450,000 of direct revenue to the National Park Service from in-park purchases.

The figures come from the group’s estimate of the shutdown’s economic impact on 12 national parks around the country.
