Sunday River starts snowmaking machines

The Sunday River Ski Resort in Newry plans to start its season Thursday after temperatures dipped low enough to begin making artificial snow Tuesday night.

WCSH6 reported the effort comes after the resort installed 224 new snowmaking machines and expanded its trails this past summer. Sugarloaf Ski Resort, in Carrabasset Valley, also added more than 200 snowmaking machines as part of a $2.9 million upgrade. Sugarloaf opened daily on Nov. 14 and has been open on weekends since Oct. 26.

Correction: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that Sugarloaf had not announced an opening date.
