Survey: Worry over economy down as concern for unemployment grows

While Mainers' concern for the overall state of the economy has dropped since last October, unemployment has grown as a major concern, according to a new survey from Critical Insights.

The number of people who cited the economy as the primary issue facing the state dropped from 59% in its October 2008 survey to 35%, according to the Portland-based firm's May 2009 survey. The number of respondents who cited unemployment as the big issue, however, more than doubled from 12% in October to 27%. Six out of 10 respondents said they supported the taxpayers' bill of rights initiative appearing on the November 2009 referendum that would require voter approval for state and local property tax increases and limit government spending increases based on inflation and population growth. Two-thirds of respondents also favored a referendum initiative to cut Maine's auto excise tax, according to the study.

Critical Insights conducted 601 random telephone interviews between May 14 and May 20. Read the entire survey here.
