Camden, a seaport town on the midcoast, and the York County town of Ogunquit have both made Tripadvisor's list of 15 "trending" destinations in the United States "on the up and up."
Tripadvisor Inc. is a Needham, Mass.-based online travel company that operates a website and mobile app with user-generated content and a comparison-shopping website. It also offers online hotel reservations and bookings for transportation, lodging, tours, restaurants and other travel experiences.
The latest list of lesser-known cities and new escapes in the United States recommended by Tripadvisor users is topped by Juneau, Alaska, followed by Page, Ariz., at No. 2 and Salem, Mass., at No. 3.
Camden and Ogunquit are the only representatives of the Pine Tree State on the U.S. trendsetters list, with Camden at No. 8 and Ogunquit at No. 14.
"Camden, Maine, is proud to call itself 'Jewel of the Coast,'" reads the blurb on the Knox County town, which is popular with boaters in the summer and skiers and tobogganers in the winter.
"A beautiful seaport town with a harbor full of sailboats, Camden has been used as the setting for so many movies, from 'Carousel' to 'Peyton Place,' and that is what many people think of when they visit New England," Tripadvisor notes. "With a series of annual festivals running all year round ... there is always something to do in Camden."
Festivals mentioned by the travel website include the U.S. Toboggan Championships, the Summer Harbor Arts Juried Arts & Craft Show and Windjammer Weekend.
For Ogunquit, Tripadvisor highlights 3.5 miles of sheltered white sand beaches as proof of the town's motto, "beautiful place by the sea."
"Take a walk along the Marginal Way, a path that winds along rocky cliffs overlooking the ocean, and explore the town center on the local public transit — an old-fashioned trolly," Tripadvisor reviewers recommend. "With art galleries, fresh seafood and the summer stock Ogunquit Playhouse, the town of Ogunquit is a favorite vacation destination."
