UNE pitches $14.5M dental patient center

The Portland Planning Board will soon take up a proposal by the University of New England for a $14.5 million Patient Care Facility, part of its new College of Dental Medicine expected to start up in 2013.

The planning board will discuss the 38,000-square-foot center Tuesday night, according to the Bangor Daily News. James Koelbl, founding dean of the dental college, said the building will be "one of the most modern dental facilities in the state of Maine," and would include training dummies as well as space for students to practice on live patients. A total of 40 faculty and staff would work there, and as many as 15,000 patients are expected to visit each year. Port City Architecture designed the building, and Allied Cook Construction of Portland would build it.

The center would be built at the site of three residences owned by UNE, and would include a new parking lot. Should the center win approval, construction would begin in July.
