USM mulls merging schools, cutting deans

The University of Southern Maine has proposed consolidating its schools and cutting three academic deans to save money.

In a draft proposal released yesterday, USM would merge its eight schools and colleges into five, according to the Portland Press Herald. Three new colleges would be: Muskie College of Public Service, Management & Society; Communication, Culture & the Arts College; and Nursing, Health Professions & STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). The Lewiston-Auburn College and the law school would remain the same. The names of the new colleges would likely change. The proposal would also eliminate three unnamed deans, each of whom receive an annual salary of $210,000, as well as an administrative assistant who earns $40,000. The proposal would save the school $750,000 a year in administrative costs.

A final draft will be submitted to USM President Selma Botman on March 19, who will then make revisions if necessary and present a final version to the system's trustees in April, according to the paper.
