Washington co. to reopen Fort Fairfield starch plant
Western Polymer Corp., based in Lake Moses, Wash., has purchased a Fort Fairfield potato starch factory that was placed into receivership by a court order in March and confirmed for sale earlier this month.
The U.S. District Court of Maine approved the sale of the former Aroostook Starch Co. to LTWAW LLC in a June 6 ruling. The Bangor Daily News reported that company will reopen the plant under the Western Polymer name and will hire back most of the previous company's employees, giving it around 10 on staff.
Lynn Townsend-White, president and CEO of Western Polymer, told the paper the company plans to begin repairs and begin work at the plant on July 8. It is the company's third starch manufacturing site in the country and its first in the Eastern U.S.
The Fort Fairfield starch operation first opened in 1952, the paper reported, and since 2006 had been under the ownership of Gritty McDuff's Brewing Co. co-founder and president Richard Pfeiffer and business partner Jim Barresi.
