Wind industry group wins award

Portland-based Maine Wind Industry Initiative, an organization that provides wind energy development services, last week received recognition for its public and industry educational efforts. The group's director, Paul Williamson, won the Academic Pioneer Award at the Energy Ocean International 2012 conference, held in Boston June 19-21.

The Energy Ocean International Academic Pioneer Award is presented to an organization that has made significant contributions toward promoting and educating the public and industry about ocean energy uses, feasibility, benefits and/or suitable locations for implementation of the technologies.

MWII received the award for its efforts to provide market and supply chain information to the Maine and regional industry sector, as well as for its educational outreach through activities such as workshops and learning events provided to school and youth groups, according to a press release.

MWII is supply-chain development group with more than 100 members. It partners with a number of other organizations in industry clusters, including the Maine Composites Alliance, the Manufacturers Association of Maine and E2Tech, as well as with major wind site developers, engineering and environmental consulting firms.
