Workers' comp reform bill clears Legislature

A bill to roll back workers' compensation changes made during the Republican-controlled Legislature cleared the House and Senate in close votes.

The bill, which has strong opposition from the Maine State Chamber and business interests, would remove a 10-year cap on workers' compensation benefits for people determined to be "partially incapacitated" and would also change the definition of that designation.

The chamber said in a May newsletter that the bill's passage would result in "dramatically higher costs for Maine businesses."

State officials have not issued a detailed estimate of how much the bill would cost the state, but a fiscal note accompanying the bill says unofficial estimates indicate the potential increase in premiums across all insured employers to be between $10 million and $41 million.
