Yarmouth lawyer suspended for alleged misconduct

Yarmouth lawyer and former town council chairman Warren Turner has been suspended from practicing law in the state of Maine for alleged misconduct.

The Maine Supreme Judicial Court suspended Turner’s ability to practice because he allegedly failed to respond to clients, failed to return their property, failed to appear in court and failed to respond to requests from the Maine Board of Overseers of the Bar, according to the Portland Press Herald. The suspension order claims Turner violated a number of the Maine Rules of Professional Conduct for practicing law. The Overseers of the Bar last fall successfully petitioned the Law Court to issue Turner a temporary suspension after he failed to renew his bar registration and complete necessary legal education.

Turner served on the Yarmouth town council three times between 1976 and 2003, resigning that year for personal reasons. In the late 1990s, he also served as chairman of the Cumberland County Civic Center board of trustees.

Turner could petition the court to reinstate him, but Scott Davis, bar counsel for the Board of Overseers, said the severity of the charges will likely keep Turner from being reinstated.
